Mere moments away from the core of Cape Town’s bustling City Centre, high up against the picturesque slopes of the Constantia Mountain range, boasts our family-owned boutique wine estate, Constantia Glen. With vineyards ideally located just below the Constantia Nek, we pride ourselves in making focussed, ultra-premium, cool climate wines that are a true expression of their distinctive terroir in the beautiful Table Mountain Heritage Site.
Steeped in history, dating back to 1685, Constantia is the oldest wine producing region in South Africa, yet the small pocket of land today knows as Constantia Glen, has a unique history. The original cattle grazing property growing grapes, peaches and pears were acquired by the Waibel family in the late 1950’s. The farming operation, however, ceased and the whole property became overgrown by pine trees, until the late 1990’s, when the family decided to reinstate the farm and its fertile soils to its initial purpose as a wine estate.
As we have always believed that winemaking starts in the vineyard, we took great care to establish which varietal clones would thrive on the farm’s varied soil sites, and after carrying out as much as 160 soil analysis in profiles of up to 3 meters deep, we could start our journey towards creating world-class wines with the planting of our first grapes in1999. By 2005 we made our first Sauvignon Blanc at a neighbouring farm while we were adding finishing touches to our purpose built, gravity fed, a wine cellar that saw its first vintage (and our first red grape harvest) in 2007.
We are undoubtedly one of the youngest wine-producing farms in the oldest wine-producing region in the Southern Hemisphere, but we have come a long way from where we started. Today we do not only celebrate our legacy, but also align ourselves with a commitment to growth in quality through sustainability and integrity.
We welcome you to our estate for a wine tasting experience in the oldest building on the farm, which has remained standing ever since the property was bought by the Waibel family in the late 1950’s…
The tasting room is open 7 days a week from 10:00 – 17:00 (except 25Dec, 1Jan & Good Friday) and tasting costs range from R50 to R80 a person. For bookings please email us: firstname.lastname@example.org.
