The Constantia Valley is truly Cape Town’s Vineyard
The oldest wine-making region in the southern hemisphere, dating back to 1685, Constantia Valley is today the Cape’s most intimate wine route consisting of nine wine farms, each with their own distinctive heritage and premium wines.
Enjoyed by Napoleon Bonaparte and royalty in the 18th century, Constantia Valley’s unique combination of terroir and climate produces some of the world’s finest wines that continue to this day to win accolades and international awards for consistently high standard and quality.
Steenberg Vineyards
Steenberg Vineyards carries the distinction of being the oldest farm in the historic and scenic Constantia Valley, having been established in 1682. Our vineyards cling to the slopes of Steenberg (Stone Mountain), part of the Table Mountain range, and within the footprint of the Cape Floral Kingdom – a world heritage site. Facing east, the vines enjoy the cool morning sun, and coupled with maritime influences like regular coastal fog and cooling sea breezes, as well as a moderate Mediterranean climate, we have idyllic conditions to create wines distinctive in character and complexity.
With 63 ha under vines, 70% consists of Sauvignon Blanc, Steenberg’s speciality, and Semillon, another great performer from our portfolio. Red cultivars include Merlot, Shiraz and the Italian cultivar, Nebbiolo. Recently we’ve released Magna Carta – a five star wine symbolizing our commitment to quality and uncompromising standards. Our wines are made by wine maker JD Pretorius – always pushing the boundaries; never settling for mediocrity.
We’ve raised the bar with a new Bistro-style cellar door restaurant and wine tasting concept unlike any other in the Constantia Valley. Named Bistro 1682 after the year in which Steenberg was first established, the bistro style restaurant has an informal ambience and offers an interactive dining experience. The food at Bistro1682 seamlessly complements Steenberg Vineyards’ exquisite wines.
