The Constantia Valley is truly Cape Town’s Vineyard

The oldest wine-making region in the southern hemisphere, dating back to 1685, Constantia Valley is today the Cape’s most intimate wine route consisting of nine wine farms, each with their own distinctive heritage and premium wines.

Enjoyed by Napoleon Bonaparte and royalty in the 18th century, Constantia Valley’s unique combination of terroir and climate produces some of the world’s finest wines that continue to this day to win accolades and international awards for consistently high standard and quality.

Buitenverwachting

Buitenverwachting meaning “Beyond Expectations” forms part of the original Constantia Estate, which was founded by Governor Simon van der Stel. First sold as a 200 morgen sub – division Buitenverwachting changed hands all too often and was finally purchased by the Mueller family in 1980. Imbued with a sense of history, they retraced the roots of Buitenverwachting, restored the historic buildings and established over 30 homes for all staff members working on the 150 hectare estate.

Wedged between the two oceans, Buitenverwachting enjoys a moderate climate, with a high annual rainfall exceeding 1000mm per annum. Deep decomposed granite soils, south east facing vineyards and an elevation of up to 250m above sea level, ensure optimal growing condition for Sauvignon blanc, one of the winery’s flagship varietals.

“Over the past decades we have specialized on Sauvignon blanc. Constantia’s climate allows for slow ripening of the fruit, resulting in full physiological ripeness. Our flavor profile is unique and the stabile fruit characters have an amazingly long life span” says Lars Maack, second generation proprietor of Buitenverwachting.

Some 30% of Buitenverwachting is north facing and more sun exposed, making it ideal for Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. With emphasis on Cabernet Franc Buitenverwachting’s focus is on densely structured classic red wines, with “Christine” being the flagship cuvee. The award winning Buitenverwachting Restaurant offers a fine dining experience for the most discerning palate, picnics under the ancient oak trees and a Deli with coffee shop opening in September 2012.

“We thrive to achieve wines that tell the Constantia story and express the true meaning of Buitenverwachting, beyond expectations”.
