Association formed to promote the Constantia Valley

Published: 15 May 2007

The Constantia Valley Association (CVA) has been formed with the vision "to position the Constantia Valley, Cape Town’s Vineyard, as the icon wine valley of South Africa and the preferred destination for visitors and locals who are looking to savour life slowly”.

Initiated by the Constantia Valley Wine Route and members of the former Constantia Valley Publicity and Tourism Association, the eight Foundation members are Buitenverwachting, Constantia Glen, Constantia Uitsig, Groot Constantia, High Constantia, Klein Constantia, Steenberg, the Winery, and Warwick Private Wealth Management.

The CVA is a professionally managed section 21 (not for profit) company dedicated to marketing this special historical area under the brand “Constantia Valley, Cape Town’s Vineyard” and to promoting quality tourism whilst maximising economic spin-offs for local businesses. An Executive Manager has been appointed with the task of promoting the CVA (and the Constantia Valley in general) to attract more visitors to the area and encouraging local businesses to support each other. The Executive Manager reports to the six-member Executive Committee of:

  • Ian Kilbride (Warwick Private Wealth Management, Chairman)
  • Tom Glover (Constantia Uitsig, Treasurer)
  • Lowell Jooste (Klein Constantia)
  • Jean Naudé (Groot Constantia)
  • Nicky Cloete-Hopkins (Alphen Hotel)
  • Joanne McGilvray (Rodwell House)

Membership of the CVA is open to all businesses operating within the Valley, subject to the payment of annual fees, and there are four membership categories to choose from: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze; an Associate membership category is available for businesses located outside but operating within the Constantia Valley. Members of the CVA can:

  • Advertise on the new, exciting Constantia Valley website and in the annual brochure, of which 50,000 copies will be distributed through tourism and other venues in 2007 (100,000 copies in 2008).
  • Attend quarterly membership functions at different venues throughout the Valley, where members can get to know their neighbours and explore possible business collaboration.
  • Gain access to wider tourism forums and other networking opportunities through the CVA’s membership of Cape Town Tourism and through regular communication by CVA with the press.
  • Participate in events, which will be developed and co-ordinated by the CVA in order to attract more visitors to the Constantia Valley, especially during the winter season. Members will also be able to list their events free of charge on the website.

The CVA is also exploring the viability and feasibility of setting up a visitor information centre, as a physical presence that will support the broader marketing effort.

Since the 17th century, the Constantia Valley has been a popular destination with locals and travellers from across the globe alike. As Robert Percival, an English officer who arrived in the Cape in 1796 said “Every stranger who arrives at the Cape…makes a point of visiting the Village of Constantia and those famous wine plantations; for these with the Table Mountain are looked upon as the great and first objects of curiosity at the Cape”.

Conveniently located at the centre of Cape Town’s Peninsula and bordered on two sides by the Table Mountain National Park, Constantia Valley, Cape Town’s Vineyard, continues to provide a unique tourism experience for 21st century visitors.

The Constantia Valley Association offers an incredible opportunity to market your business to local and overseas visitors on the new, improved website (to be launched at the end of May) and in 50,000 copies of the brochure (publication due in early July).

The response has been fantastic from people contacted so far and members who have already joined the Association include the Alphen Hotel, Cellars-Hohenhort, Constantia Village, Peddlars on the Bend, Constantia Woods and Peter Gilder.
