Welcome

April flew by in a rush with preparations for the Crush event which turned out to be a fantastic day out for all who attended. The food from the Constantia Valley Restaurants was divine, the Constantia wines were as always delectable and the marquees looked magnificent! I feel I must say a huge thank you to Greg and his team from Cozi Hire for their assistance, professionalism and patience in helping us through our worries over a whole host of things but in particular the weather. We now know we can just listen to his advice as the marquees were so great that even if we had of experienced a hurricane the party would have been able to go on unaffected!

I also need to say thank you to Peter Gilder and his band Spectrum, these guys (and gal) really do know how to “get the party started” and as per previous years the dance floor was packed throughout the day. The team of behind the scenes workers were also brilliant so a big thank you needs to go to the scholars from the KiDS Foundation, Karen and Terry from the CVA, Kathy and the maintenance guys from Constantia Uitsig, Chantel and Nadine from the Wine Shop and finally a huge thank you must go to my better half Ian and our kids Jake, Maddy, Connor and Liam for putting up with hastily thrown together dinners, long hours and at times my being very short of patience! Was it worth it? Well judging by the smiles on all of the faces and the lovely emails and feedback after the event I would say the Crush should be seen as Constantia’s main event but next time we will be doing it in summer!!!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the magnificent women out there!

Until next time,
Jooles Pienaar

La Colombe 12th Best Restaurant in the World

La Colombe, one of Cape Town’s most well-loved and awarded restaurants, achieved an impressive 12th place in The San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants of the World awards, announced in London on the 26th April. Having moved up 26 places and into the hallowed Top 20, this bastion of contemporary French-meets-Asian fine dining thereby also clinched the Aqua Panna best restaurant in Africa and Middle East award.

A thrilled Head Chef Luke Dale-Roberts puts the success down to his first rate culinary brigade and front-of-house team, both of which he notes as integral to the restaurant’s year-on-year growth and success, “this is fantastic recognition for the entire team at La Colombe as we have really put in a concentrated effort to be as precise as possible in everything we do. We are thrilled with the result!” he said.

Dale-Roberts and the La Colombe team join culinary luminaries such as Ferran Adrià, whose famed concept-driven restaurant El Bulli was shifted into second place from last year’s number one rating by 32-year-old wünderkind Rene Redzepi, head chef at Copenhagen gourmet destination Noma. The awards, organized by the UK’s Restaurant Magazine tallied votes from an Academy of over 800 esteemed international critics, journalists and food experts to establish the hallowed annual list of the best names and places in the world of gourmet dining.

This year’s awards show a marked movement in places, demonstrating that the awards is a true showcase of the most dynamic eateries and groundbreaking chefs in the world and not simply an account of established restaurants. Paul Wootton, editor of Restaurant Magazine says “this year’s list is an exciting one that highlights in particular the wealth of young, dynamic chefs bringing new ideas to the world of gastronomy”.

For Dale-Roberts who, since taking the reins of the La Colombe kitchen in 2006, has worked tirelessly in his kitchen to push culinary boundaries, raise quality levels and continue to excite the palates of his discerning clientele, the award is a welcome note of recognition, but he is resolute that he and his team will march on business as usual “they say you’re only as good as the last plate you’ve served and though we’re over the moon, it’s not going to change our commitment to pushing the boundaries of excellence and culinary possibilities”, said Luke.

The S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards were held at the Guildhall in London on Monday 26th April 2010 in a ceremony often referred to as the ‘Oscars’ of the global dining scene.

La Colombe, winner of both Chef of the Year and Restaurant of the Year in the Prudential Eat Out Awards 2008, was also honoured with the prestigious Eat Out Restaurant of the Year title for 2009. The restaurant has also achieved the highest three star rating in both the 2009 and 2010 issues of the acclaimed Rossouw’s Restaurants guide.

Buitenverwachting – Wines and Restaurant

The Wines

The Constantia Valley is the oldest wine growing region in South Africa. It is produces distinctive wines which have established the valley as a world renowned appellation. Buitenverwachting Wine Estate is an integral part of that distinction.

Buitenverwachting’s superior wines are available at the farm for tasting; where you will be greeted by Ilze Rens the knowledgeable Manager of the Tasting Room.
Taste the elegant 2009 Hussey’s Vlei Sauvignon Blanc.
The quite delicious Rough Diamond 2006, a blend of Petit Verdot and Malbec, this full bodied red blend offers a variation of red berries, dark chocolate, black pepper and loads of spicy characters
The 2007 Merlot should be on sale soon; definitely worth waiting for; it follows the style of the 2006 vintage although a little fuller on the palate.

The Restaurant

Fine dining in a contemporary, continental atmosphere with a South African edge... the most fantastic views in Constantia and well trained staff to look after your every wish.

Cheerful and experienced Restaurant Manager Etienne Borman tells us that the exciting Winter Menu which is about to be introduced, is to be known as The Nuptials it is an exercise in the perfect marriage of the fantastic wine cellar of the Restaurant and the innovative techniques of the chef Edgar Osojnik. More on that next time.

Also look out for the Winter Warmer specials.

Pierre Cronje – Designer Table Exhibition

Pierre Cronje to exhibit new line of Tables

4th to the 12th of June 2010

The month of June will see the Pierre Cronje Table exhibition, where Pierre’s finest table designs will be on show for all to appreciate.

Pierre Cronje first got the idea for a table exhibition after his design for his “Origins” table was showcased at the Johannesburg Southern Guild Art Exhibition in 2010. This table, as well as the Bloukrans table (the design of which came about after Pierre worked as an engineer on the Bloukrans Bridge on the Garden Route), motivated Pierre to experiment with many new table designs. From the 4th to the 12th of June, some of these designs will be exhibited at the new Wolfe Street Showroom in Chelsea, Wynberg.

Steenberg Vineyards – Wine specials and news

Steenberg Vineyards was voted amongst the Top Twenty producers in South Africa by a panel compiled by Tim James, Grape blogger (www.grape.co.za) The Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve was voted amongst the top ten White wines in South Africa by the same panel.

Following closely on its heels, Neil Pendock compiled a similar list as the Good Value Guru, where Steenberg made the Top Twenty list again, and the Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve made the Top Ten White Wines list again!

This is a fantastic achievement for Steenberg Vineyards , to attain the same results by two completely independent lists and people.

Our Special for May is Steenberg Catharina 2006, at R140.00 per bottle – we are almost sold out!

Steenberg won the annual Potjiekos Competition with Brad Ball’s pot, and Anetha Homan, Sales and Marketing Manager ending in 3rd place – not only do we make good wine, but we can cook as well, with both JD (our wine maker) and John Loubser having achieved third and first places in the past!

Klein Constantia – Harvest News

Klein Constantia 2010-Small Yields, Big Quality

Vintage 2010 has been an unbelievable learning curve. From the late rains in 2009,wind during flowering in October and the double rainfall in November through to the incredibly hot, dry month of February, we knew we were going to be tested. Coupled with our ongoing changes towards moresustainable viticultural practices (i.e. no herbicides, less pesticides and fungicides, full cover cropping, no-till and no chemical fertilizers) these conditions resulted in a magnificently small crop and a harvest that just flew by.

Despite the inconvenience to the farm resulting from such a small crop, there are several positives that can be drawn from the situation, most importantly an increased understanding of our soils and individual vineyard blocks. Their requirements in terms of nutrients and whether or not they are in a state of balance, is now without question known to us, whereas previously it was uncertain. This enables us to tailor specific viticultural practices for individual blocks in the future.

We look to 2011 with a sense of excitement, and as I write this are in the throes of implementing strategies to improve next year’s yields whilst maintaining the high level of quality which has been a feature of this year’s crop.

Vin de Constance scores 2nd consecutive 94 points

Wine Spectator James Molesworth has rewarded Adam Mason's 2nd vintage of Vin de Constance - the 2005 - with 94 points, repeating the achievement of his maiden 1994 vintage at Klein Constantia.

Adam stepped into the sizeable winemaking shoes of the late Ross Gower, who played a major role in reviving the legendary Constantia sweet wine in 1986, helping rebuild its international 200 year-old reputation until his last vintage of Vin de Constance, the 2002.

Determined not to rest on the laurels of their combined previous successes, he is striving to make even better wine from the current 7 hectares of Muscat de Frontignan grown on this historic property.

Molesworth enjoyed the 'very bright, racy style' and 'long, pure finish', noting that the 2005 should 'give the superb 2004 a run for its money'. He finds it attractively priced in relation to other international dessert wines of similar quality. It is packaged in distinctive 500ml asymmetrical bottles, and sells for R370 per bottle from the cellar door.
