Welcome

Someone said to me this morning “Do you realize there are only 65 days to go until the World Cup?” “Forget the World Cup I thought that is still far off, the Crush on Constantia is just around the corner!” Look don’t get me wrong I cannot wait for the World Cup but there is still life in between and for me and another 1000 guests the Crush is an event you just have to attend!

One of our local residents popped in to purchase her tickets the other day and gleefully advised that she had “stuck” her previous years’ ticket on to her new years’ calendar so she would not forget. A couple based in the UK who receive this newsletter emailed us and asked us to please put aside their tickets so they could be sure to attend. I think to be able to attract that kind of enthusiasm proves that our little region most certainly has something to offer. This year there will be 15 restaurants and of course our 8 wine farms at the event each offering something that will delight the adult palette.

Tickets are R130 and this includes 8 wine tastings. Constantia Tokens are the currency at the event and these can be purchased from the dynamic team who will be on duty on the day. Each token has a R5 value and can be used to purchase food and wine.

Finally don’t forget the prize for the Best Dressed Couple it really is worth making some effort for that one.

In closing I want to say a special and heartfelt “WELL DONE” to the Eagles Nest team for doing their bit to conserve nature in our valley, I am not going to spoil the story though so please read on to find out about this and much more.

Until next time,
Jooles Pienaar

Hendrik Vermeulen Couturier dresses Premier Helen Zille

We are truly honoured to have been a part of an amazing fundraiser for the MyLife foundation, where we dressed Premier Helen Zille. The dress was auctioned and the money donated to MyLife, to help give children on the street a second chance in life, through education and providing them with the tools to build a new life.

We are proud to announce our latest range that was unveiled at the Cape Town Carnival Couture show. The response to the range was amazing due to our use of flowing printed silk chiffons, ostrich feather coats, essential sexy cocktail dresses and detailed corsets. These exquisite garments are now available for sale at our studio in Westlake Lifestyle Centre.

Kindly note that the remaining items from the summer collection are now on sale at discounted prices and are perfect for cocktail or Matric Dance dresses.

A funky, playful and sexy range of shoes is now available from our studio.

As the wedding season is coming to an end, the Matric Dance season is heating up. Please book your consultation as soon as possible, in order to allow time for new, thrilling options, like having custom designed printed fabric.

Eagles’ Nest – Adopts Last remaining Black Eagle's nest

Eagles’ Nest Wines has committed to supporting the last remaining Black Eagles’ nest on the Cape Peninsular. This nesting site, which is situated in Silvermine Nature reserve just six kilometres, as the eagle flies, from the farm, is being monitored and protected by a team from the Western Cape Raptor Research Programme with the support of the farm.

The Black Eagle, or more correctly, Verreaux’s Eagle, used to be more prevalent on the peninsular and is almost certainly the bird that the farm was first named after in the early 1800’s. A pair of Black Eagles has raised a chick at this nest every year for the last six years and Raptor Research team leader, Lucia Rodrigues, has been checking up on the pair at frequent intervals since late February. On Wednesday 17th March she saw a single adult fly in, clutching a large stick, and on to the “second nest". This is a smaller nest structure that both adults fly onto from time to time, much smaller than the nest they use for breeding. Although this is quite frequently seen on most nest cliffs, no one really knows why Black Eagles seem to maintain more than one structure despite the fact that they regularly use just the one.

The Silvermine Pair Soar Above Their Nest - Goren Meidad.

At this time of year Black Eagles are deciding where to breed, therefore the incident is very encouraging. Should the Silvermine pair breed again at their Noordhoek Peak nest, it will be their seventh consecutive year, which is quite a significant record. As they are the only resident pair on the whole of the peninsula mountain chain, we should keep our fingers crossed that all goes well and they raise another chick to fledgling stage.

Eagles’ Nest Wines continue to soar

Eagles’ Nest, the boutique winery high up in Constantia, is continuing to wow the pundits and the public alike with their Merlot, Viognier and Shiraz.

The 2007 Shiraz, now sold out, won the coveted International Shiraz Trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition towards the end of last year. This accolade joined a long string of accomplishments for their Shiraz, making it one of the most awarded wines in South Africa. The 2008 vintage, which is going to be released in May, is regarded as their finest Shiraz to date and is being allocated pre-release – so contact the farm if you want to be one of the lucky few to experience one of South Africa’s great wines.

Jamie Goode, a very prominent wine critic in the United Kingdom with his site www.wineanorak.com, recently visited South Africa. Eagles’ Nest was very fortunate to host him and he came away stating that the Eagles’ Nest Viognier is possibly the finest example of this grape variety in South Africa. Click here to read the article. Eagles’ Nest has less than 1 ha planted to Viognier, producing in the region of 4000 bottles per year. It is a classic, barrel fermented white wine with beautiful aromas of apricots and jasmine – the ideal partner to sushi and mild Thai cuisine. The current vintage is the 2008, with the 2009 being released in May.

Finally, their Merlot 2006 which was awarded 4-stars in the Platter Wine Guide has gone on to be recommended by WINE Magazine as their ‘Investment Red Wine’ in the March 2010 edition, highlighting the fact that the wines from Eagles’ Nest are classic in style and will continue to develop and mature in bottle for many years to come.

Eagles’ Nest welcomes visits to the farm by appointment. Please contact Andrew Leaver on 021-6830487 or email aleaver@eaglesnestwines.com. Their wines are available in top wine shops throughout South Africa and online at www.eaglesnestonline.co.za.
