Welcome

The festive season in the Constantia Valley flew by in a blur and I am delighted to report that we took immense pleasure in seeing record numbers of visitors enjoying what we have to offer.

 

I was fortunate to meet and mingle with many visitors (I love to brag about Constantia) and it always gives me a real thrill to hear what people really think about this magnificent part of the Western Cape.

As we get back into the swing of things the thrill of the festive season soon becomes a distant memory as we go about our daily lives, but don’t forget that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and there is no better place to celebrate this romantic occasion.

Constantia Fresh Sauvignon Blanc Festival

For the Love of Sauvignon Blanc Constantia Fresh Festival - 26th & 27th February 2010
 

 

PROGRAM OF EVENTS

 

International Sauvignon Blanc tasting
Friday 26th February 2010
14h00 -19h00 (R1500 per person)

Buitenverwachting hosts the International Sauvignon Blanc tasting in their Old Cellar where guests will taste different vintages from the best producers of the Loire, alongside New Zealand and the Constantia region with the purpose of establishing stylistic differences, ageability, strong and weak points in comparison to other world-class Sauvignon Blancs.
 
Fine Dining at award winning restaurant La Colombe
Friday 26th February 2010
19h30 – 00h00 (R1500 per person)

Award-winning La Colombe restaurant is the location for the Fine-Dining event with matured international and Constantia Sauvignon Blanc highlighting Sauvignon Blanc food compatibility. Guests will be welcomed with a glass of Constantia Méthode Cap Classique and an introduction into the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc by Master of Wine Cathy van Zyl. A brief address will be given by Luke Dale-Roberts, executive chef of La Colombe Restaurant.
 
International Red Wine Tasting
Saturday 27th February 2010
11h00 – 13h30 (R700 per person)

Groot Constantia will host an international Red Wine Tasting of which the objective is to showcase the importance of freshness in Red Wines. The line up of wines will feature different Vintages of Bordeaux, high-end Australian Shiraz, wines of the northern Rhone Valley and South African Bordeaux blends and Shiraz out of Constantia and other Regions.
 
Sauvignon Blanc and food pairing Exhibition
Saturday 27th February 2010
15h00 -18h00 with picnic to follow from 18h00 – 21h30 (R450 per person)

Set up on the lawn of Buitenverwachting, the Sauvignon Blanc Exhibition will take the form of food and wine pairing walk around tasting. All exhibiting regions will be paired with the top chefs of Cape Town and other Sauvignon Blanc producing regions so that guests will be able to select and taste the foods of these chefs with the suitable wines.
 
Once the exhibition has ended guests will be welcomed to a picnic on the lawns for a bottle of Constantia red wine and live entertainment to end off a glorious weekend.

A FEAST FOR ALL SENSES: BISTRO SIXTEEN 82 AT STEENBERG
 
Introducing a whole new era of informal dining at the Cellar door, stylish new Bistro Sixteen82 perfectly offsets the new Winery, Wine Tasting Bar and Tasting Lounge on the Steenberg estate.
 

By all accounts, with its tranquil vineyards setting and relaxed ambience, it is fast becoming a popular choice for groups of friends and families to dine together. It’s been launched with aplomb and already restaurant goers are packing the bistro to capacity and filtering through to the popular Wine Tasting Lounge and Bar.

 

Whilst the casual ambience lends itself to great family outings, the stylish Wine Bar and terrace with rim flow and reflection pools are attracting the trendy set to our shores. It seems the jet-set are keen to indulge in a stint of culinary delight and explorative wine tasting this side of the mountain!

Those who have savoured dishes from Executive Chef and bistro dining specialist Brad Ball’s Breakfast and Lunch menus, are declaring them nothing short of a taste sensation. His Tapas menu is proving a popular late afternoon option, with tastings of mouth-watering delicacies accompanied by Steenberg’s fine selection of wines. 

 

Bistro Sixteen82 is open daily for breakfast from 09:00 until 11:30 and lunch is served between 12:00 and 16:00. Snack platters are available throughout the day from the interactive Raw Food Bar, and a Tapas menu of small tasting portions of select dishes can be enjoyed in the late-afternoon and at sunset (16:30 – 19:30).

NEW SPA MANAGER HAS THE ‘MAGIC TOUCH’

Evelyn Stewart has been promoted to Spa Manager at Ginkgo Spa at Steenberg. She has been working here as Assistant Spa Manager for the past two years, after she first joined the Ginkgo Spa and Wellness Group in September 2006.

It’s new; it’s trendy: it’s - The Courtyard, located on the outside area surrounding the fountain at Buitenverwachting, the gentle sound of water, the natural beauty of the charming gardens all add to the pleasure of this new eatery where one can spend hours enjoying the company of friends and partaking of wines made on this outstanding Constantia Estate.

 

There is a light luncheon menu available and from 3 p.m. Tapas will be served on boards designed by Edgar especially for this new eatery. Daily selections are displayed on a blackboard from which choices can be made in sets of:

3 Courses for R99
5 Courses for R129 or
7 Courses for R159

 

Tapas will not be served singly although if you wish to add a sweet Tapas to one of the selections you have made, it won't be a problem ...

 

To add to your pleasure High Tea will be served between 3 and 5.30 p.m. at R140 per adult and R70 per child. Guests can help themselves to the most delicious spread of savoury and sweet temptations imaginable.

The décor in this very special restaurant is superb with the most comfortable seating you could wish for!
 
The dinner menu is a 3, 4 or 5 course menu from which you can choose any dish ấ la carte and make up your own delicious selection for the meal.

 


 
In addition to this selection, there is a menu containing Edgar’s Classics – these are dishes for which his fame has spread far and wide ... gourmet flavours such as his Pan-fried Madagascan Wild Prawns with Bagna Cauda, Avocado, Daikon, Cucumber and Spring Onion, pictured here, is mouth-wateringly delicious.
 
Another one of Edgar’s creations is the deconstructed Caesar Salad served with white Anchovies, Parmesan Foam, poached Quail Eggs and seared Norwegian Salmon, perfect for Cape Town’s hot summer days.

They are great value at R75 per wooden board which is made up of cheeses, cold cuts (kudu/schwarzwald bacon, salami, pickles, grapes, nuts and landbrot; served with Rye Bread.


Divine is the only word to describe these delightful ‘platters’.

PICNICS


Picnic Baskets are served at Tables under the Oaks on the lawns from 12h00 to 16h00 daily except on Sundays and public holidays.

 

Picnics are yummy and made up of Snoek Pâté, Vegetarian Quiche, Black Forest Ham, Meatballs and Chicken Roll. A selection of cheeses, nuts and fresh salads served with Breads and Biscuits, Tea and Coffee together with Desserts complete your delicious meal in the open air.
